Leeds are celebrating another boxing success after West Leeds ABC’s Stevi Mennell stormed through to the semi-finals of the Senior Novice Championships.

Mennell had already been crowned Senior Novice Championships Yorkshire champion in the 67-71kg category and last weekend took on Karl Wiggins of Eastside ABC.

And after four tense four two-minute rounds, he outpointed his opponent 7-5.

The bout was level 1-1 after the first round and again all square at 2-2 in the second.

Even after the third round the two fighters were again level on points at 3-3 but a rampant final round from Mennell saw him earn a gutsy victory, much to the delight of coach Danny Thornton.

“We had an idea that Wiggins would be a very strong and tricky customer so we had a game plan to stay away in the first round, using footwork and straight jabs against the forward-coming opponent,” said Thornton.

“The last round was a case of who wanted it more so I gave my advice to Stevi going into the fourth and really geed him up – got the fire going in his belly.

“Even after the fourth no one knew who was the clear winner.

“It was a well-deserved victory, but full credit to Wiggins as he played his part in a fantastic bout.

“Both boxers gave it 110 per cent throughout.”
