David Walker was a convincing winner of the ABA Men’s Merit at Meanwood Bowling Club, seeing off the challenge of Ira Jeffers, 21-9 in the final.

Over the first two ends the scores were even with both bowlers having scored two shots.

Over the next 11 ends, Walker played some excellent bowls to score 13 points to Jeffers’ four to lead 15-6.

Jeffers then picked up three points over the next two ends to trail 15-9. But once again, Walker pulled away and got the six shots needed over the next five ends to win the game 21-9.

To get to the final, Walker defeated Steven Gilroy, 21-16 in the first semi-final.

The game was very close throughout, with the scores locked at 2-2, 4-4, 5-5, 8-8 and 10-10 after 15 ends.

Gilroy picked up two shots to lead 12-10, before Walker then replied with four shots over the next four ends to lead 14-12.

Gilroy scored another point at the next end but Walker once again got four shots to lead 18-13 at the 23rd end.

However, Walker held his nerve and closed out the match at 21-16.

In the second semi-final, Jeffers defeated Mark Allman, 21-15.

This was another close encounter. After the first 12 ends the scores were level at 9-9.

Allman took a two-point lead at the next end but Jeffers replied with a run of seven shots to lead 16-11 at the 18th end.

Allman then scored four shots to one to trail 17-15. Over the next three ends, Jeffers got the four points required to win 21-15.
