Athletics: Duo set to fight for Yorkshire title

The Yorkshire and Humberside Cross Country Championships take place on Sunday at the Northern Racing College, Doncaster.

Mark Buckingham defends his title in the senior race. He won a close contest with Longwood's Andrew Pearson in last year's race and these two could again fight it out for the title.

Former winner John Heneghan (Pudsey and Bramley) is another who should challenge strongly.

A below-strength Leeds City were beaten in this race last year by Hallamshire and the South Yorkshire squad will make a determined effort to retain their crown.

Leeds City are missing some top athletes who compete for other counties, James Walsh (Warwickshire), Alan Buckley (Notts), Simon Deakin and Martin Roscoe (Lancs) whilst James Wilkinson is training in Kenya. However, with Martin Hilton, Mike Burrett, Darran Bilton, Adam Osborne and Chris Birchall spearheading their challenge, it is still a strong Leeds team.

Victoria Wilkinson (Bingley) defends her women's title with last year's runner-up Susan Partridge a strong contender again. Hallamshire defend their team title but Partridge leads a strong Leeds City challenge.

The meeting starts at 11.10am with the under-13 girls race with the senior events at 1.30pm (women) and 2.10pm (men).

Leeds City's Daniel Gardiner bids for a medal in the English Indoor Combined Events Championship at Sheffield tomorrow and Sunday.

The men do a hepthalon whilst the women do a pentathlon, with all their events on Sunday.

Leeds City's Amy Marchant and Jenny Lumley are in the senior section with Katy Marchant a strong contender in the junior section.
