As the saying goes: “It’s great when a plan comes together.” But I think everyone was surprised at the number of anglers that turned up to support the Macmillan fundraising night held at the Leeds Anglers Club.

Based on an indoor car boot sale but without the cars, tables were soon full of old and new fishing tackle for sale, from as little as a few pence to as high as the auctioneer could drag out of them.

A number of forgotten gems were seen on the night, with some classic centre pin reels being spun by those who can remember how to use one, and an old, original Sundridge Kevin Ashurst match rod caught my eye as I remember it been the first carbon rod I ever bought.

I think it cost the equivalent of about three weeks’ wages from Kirkgate’s long-gone Lindsley Brothers Gun Shop in the mid 1970s. In those days, with a tackle shop on nearly every corner, you seemed to pay ‘top dollar’ for everything you bought and the words “do a deal” hadn’t been invented. This night showed how times have changed. It was good to see anglers from different disciplines of the sport all coming together under one roof in aid of charity.

And the evening was brought to an end with a nice touch from the fishery bailiff at Knotford, who had taken it upon himself to collect donations from the carp regulars while they were fishing, and managed to fill an envelope with £240.

The event raised a total of £1,160 in cash, all of which was donated to the Macmillan Cancer Support Group.

York & District’s Christmas Fur and Feather lost its festive feel as competitors arrived to the news that organiser Tim Harrison had suffered a heart attack earlier that morning and was in an induced coma at York Hospital.

With the help of volunteers, the match went ahead as he would have wanted, though as what seemed a mark of respect his favourite River Ouse, which had recently been in fantastic form, pulled one of its moods and produced a dour result.

Stan Haigh (Anglers World) took top spot on the day with just 5-08.

The sad news arrived Wednesday morning as we learned that Tim had passed away.

He was always known as one of the best attack-minded anglers with brilliant organising skills and was always able to more than hold his own in any company.

He was also part of the select Anglers World Team that stormed through the divisions at national level in the late eighties early nineties and, after all that, he was honestly one of the nicest guys you could meet.

I know he left an impression on everyone he met and the sport of angling has lost one of the best – a true class act.

Tim was only 63 and leaves a wife and three children.
