Yorkshire nostalgia: East Riding bans Last Tango in Paris

East Riding County Council wrote to cinemas across the district calling on them to ban The Last Tango In Paris. Clerk to the council R A Whitley confirmed letters had gone out to all cinemas saying any screenings of the film would represent an 'offence in public feeling.'

Starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider, the film is about a widower’s violent affair with a young girl. Oscar Topham, deputy mayor of Bridlington, said: “I have not seen the film but I have read the script and I did not intend to waste my time sitting through such a filthy film.”

The story appeared in the Yorkshire Evening Post in February 1974.

However, it wasn’t the only show drawing criticism - a 60-minute play by William Fairchild called The Break, screened on YTV, resulted in calls for demonstrations outside the Leeds studios. Protesters said they were outraged by the film’s portrayal of sustained mental violence.
