Leeds nostalgia: Lloyds Black Horse statue causes a stir

When the story appeared in the YEP in February 1975, the 14ft-tall metal Peter Tysoe creation was described by one Loiner as “very unrestful”, while another said it was a distasteful clash with the existing statue of the Black Prince in City Square. Our picture, taken by photographer James Hardisty in 2015, shows the horse before it was moved to Sheepscar.

The sculpture had stood on Park Row since it was installed outside what was then the northern headquarters of Lloyds Bank.

However, in 2016, it was moved to Lovell Park Road, and was renamed Cancara after the equine star of a long-running series of TV adverts.

Lloyds began using the famous symbol after its 19th Century takeover of another bank which used the design as its logo.
