Leeds nostalgia: Kieran saves family from hotel blaze

A 13-year-old boy was hailed a hero after waking his family during the small hours to alert them to a fire in their hotel in Leeds.

The story appeared in the YEP in January 1970.

Kieran Hough lived at the Great Northern Hotel, Richardshaw Lane, Stanningley (near Leeds) when the fire broke out on New Year’s Day.

His actions undoubtedly saved the family.

He woke his brother, Kevin, 20, and parents Joe Hough (licensee) and Mrs Hough, who then phoned for the fire brigade.

Firemen had to smash windows to reach a guest at the hotel, a Mr J Butler of Kent - when they reached him, he was apparently already dressed, as he had woken early in order to go to work.

Keiran’s mother said: “When Keiran woke, the smoke was really thick. The brigade manage to contain the fire to the one bedroom.”
