Leeds nostalgia: Crab meets with fate...

Clara the crab, a resident of Leeds City Museum's natural history department, who had been pregnant when caught gave birth to around 5,000 baby crabs.

Unfortunately they were all sucked down the drain by a rather efficient tank filter.

The article appeared in the YEP in February 1973.

Staff said they had not spotted the eggs when they collected the crab from Filey Brigg, adding it was too far to return it to give birth.

There’s no knowing quite what happened to Clara’s offspring but it seems unlikely any will have made it to the sea, as not only would they have had to survive the city’s sewers, they would also have had to pass through the sewage works and even assuming they somehow managed that, it was still a long way.
