The project has been inspired by project support worker Adam Somers, from music charity Cloth Cat, in Holbeck.

Project co-ordinator Mike Jolly said: “The idea came after talking to Adam about establishing a community record label arm of Cloth Cat.

“Through the open mic we run, we found that many local artists were writing songs about the city, whether that was about living here and its culture or about the history of the city, and we thought it would be great document these songs together.”

The ‘Laikin’ name of the album uses the old Yorkshire word for ‘playing’. It is due to be launched at The Chemic Tavern on Johnston Street, Woodhouse, Leeds on Saturday, February 10.

All the money raised will go to Cloth Cat to help run projects in the community.

This release will be the first in a series of themed compilations exploring life within the city. Future albums will include tracks about mental health and international culture and language within Leeds.

Cloth Cat will also support these grassroots artists further by providing access to their resources and services, which the charity provides at its base at Old Chapel Studios in Holbeck.

Laikin in Leeds is a pay-as-you-feel event and runs from 7pm until 12.30am. The CD will be available on the night or from store.cdbaby.com/cd/various726 now.
