HAS anyone else noticed the illuminated decorations on the pillars of the Civic Hall in Leeds? "Happy Xmas" it proclaims. Xmas is shorthand, at best for Christmas. Is Leeds City Council so dismissive of the Christian heritage of this country (which causes no offence to anyone else of other traditons), that it has to do the negative? Crossing Christ out: 'X'.
In the same spirit, I wish Leeds City Council a very happy 'Xmas', or whatever. If you can't be bothered to say it right, don't say it at all.
