Letter: Unfortunate sign of austere times

Have your say

ON reading that nearly 100 jobs are to go at Leeds City College (YEP, May 8), I noticed it has 57,000 students, a ratio of 25 per staff employes (2,300), before reducing staff numbers, which does not seem excessive.

Yet it only takes 30,000 staff employed by Leeds City Council to run the city, so it seems the college probably does have more staff than can be afforded in these times of austerity.

This opens the door to many other possible cuts, like cutting councillors by 40 per cent, as previous letter writers have recently hinted at, and not least making more houses (empty for years) fit to live in, including council houses to reduce the 33,000 on the waiting list.
