Having had first hand experience of the fiasco that is Edinburgh Trams where an original stated cost of £375m is set to break through the £1bn barrier and the scheme is currently two years overdue – I am somewhat sceptical about the New Generation Transport (aka trolley bus) system planned for Leeds.
To install an infrastructure of overhead lines which is bound to have a finite life, to accommodate a dated mode of inflexible transport is in my view folly.
What Leeds needs is the proposed network of Park & Ride terminals serviced by hybrid double deck buses with improved bus lanes where appropriate. There could then be a gradual switch to fully battery powered buses when available.
