Yorkshire weather and traffic: Be careful out there as cold spell looks set to continue

A severe weather warning was in place for the whole of the county overnight and the Met Office said: “Please be aware of the likelihood of some difficult driving conditions, especially on minor roads, and some slippery surfaces.”

Temperatures in Yorkshire are not expected to climb above 4C (39F) today, with a risk of sleet and snow showers this afternoon.

Widespread frost is predicted tonight, with temperatures likely to fall to as low as -2C (28F).

And the cold snap is set to continue into the weekend, with snow showers a possibility in coastal areas tomorrow.

Meanwhile, drivers faced rush-hour delays this morning after an accident shut two lanes of the M62 eastbound near Huddersfield.

The B6128 Grange Road in Batley is closed in both directions between the Mill Lane and A653 Leeds Road junctions due to yesterday’s mill fire. Diversions are in operation.

There are also ongoing problems for motorists in flood-hit communities such as Tadcaster, Mytholmroyd and Elland.

No issues were reported this morning on the county’s trains.

Today:

After a very cold and frosty start the morning will be dry and sunny. Cloudier in the afternoon with some sleet and snow for a time. Feeling very cold in the raw northwesterly breeze. Maximum Temperature 4°C.

Tonight:

A cold night with a widespread frost and further wintry showers. These will be rain or sleet near the coast but fall as snow inland. Minimum Temperature -2°C.

Saturday:

Another frosty start with ice on untreated surfaces. The day will remain cold with sunny spells and scattered snow showers. These will be mainly towards the coast. Light winds. Maximum Temperature 2°C.

Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday:

Staying cold with sharp overnight frosts and sunshine by day. A few snow showers likely, more especially on Tuesday.
