Yorkshire: Bulgarian trucker arrested after driver injured

THE driver of a Spanish-registered lorry was arrested after a collision outside Selby in North Yorkshire left another driver suffering multiple injuries.

A 44-tonne Scania articulated heavy goods vehicle registered in Spain was being driven on the A19 at Barlby, near Selby, when the accident happened at 1.30 on Tuesday afternoon. The lorry was being driven north from the direction of Selby.

The lorry was turning on to the A163 when it collided with a blue Fiat Scudo van which was heading south.

Inspector Vicky Taylor of North Yorkshire police said the van driver, who is from West Yorkshire, was airlifted to hospital in York suffering multiple injuries.

Inspector Taylor said: “The Scania driver was arrested. The A19 was closed for several hours.”

Police said later that the driver of the lorry was a 50-years-old Bulgarian who is being kept in custody.

The van driver was reported to be “stable.”

Police have appealed for witnesses to the collision, or anyone who saw either of the vehicles before it happened, to contact Tadcaster police on 0845 6060247 and ask for extention 2725.
