YEP Says: A red letter day for city’s lonely

Have your say

WHO said letter writing is a dying art? That message has clearly not reached those University of Leeds students who have become penpals with local residents as part of special scheme to help combat loneliness.

The initiative has become so popular that it now has 112 writers who are determined to give something back to the city. The social benefits are epitomised by Bramley resident Margaret Quirke who said: “I like writing and receiving letters. Seeing your name on an envelope through the door is so much better than an email.”

The benefits don’t end here. If this scheme takes off further, it could also be a red letter day for the Royal Mail.
