THERE ARE few issues with stir the emotions as much as plans for new houses.

People, quite rightly, get upset over the prospect of houses and flats being built on open spaces in the city.

So the claim by a Leeds city councillor that the basic target for Leeds to get 42,000 new homes by 2028 is flawed is interesting.

Is Coun Andrew Carter correct? Do we in fact need fewer homes? We don’t know but we feel it is essential that Leeds City Council explores this issue fully to protect our green spaces from unnecessary development.

He has proposed a vote of no confidence in Leeds City Council.

The Labour authority’s member responsible for planning, Coun Richard Lewis, said he was “very surprised and somewhat disappointed” that an Extraordinary Meeting has been scheduled tomorrow to debate the Sites Allocations Plan (SAP).

It is vital that Leeds City Council gets its sums correct. And it is vital that we get the right type of homes in the right area.

Coun Carter says he is “not prepared to see our environment wilfully and needlessly sacrificed”.

We look forward to a robust debate on this so we can be confident we have an accurate and acceptable plans. Ruining neighbourhoods by overdevelopment is not an option.
