HOW wonderful that our friends in Germany have written a letter criticising Brussels bureaucrats for dismissing Leeds’s Capital of Culture application.

In an open letter, cities including Dresden and Kassell – who are themselves bidding to host the title in 2025 – said they were “deeply frustrated and saddened” by the announcement from the European Commission that they would not support applications from UK cities.

In a week when the World Cup draw has been made, this is a further illustration that Europe and the World should come together and be united rather than creating divisions.
