At the Yorkshire Evening Post we understand that the future of Leeds depends on making sure all our children get the best education - and that they truly feel part of this fabulous city of ours.

That’s why we decided to launch The Reading Passport with our friends at the News Foundation, for the second year running .

The scheme gives youngsters the chance to learn about Leeds and improve their literacy skills through our news pages.

Pupils receive their own Reading Passport activity book and a heavily discounted copy of the YEP delivered to the school once a week for six weeks.

They are then challenged with a series of fun and educational activities packed into the pocket-sized passport booklet.

The aim is to help youngsters develop a wide range of skills as they explore the people, places and events that shape the world around them.

Our youngest generations might not be used to reading the news in print but we know how much they - and their parents - get a thrill from seeing their photograph and reading about their work in the paper.

It’s not too late for schools to sign up. Turn to page 12 - and read all about it!
