And after years of broken promises and failed plans, you can understand this scepticism.

But actually, Leeds does have a bright future, despite the scrapping of Leeds’s long-delayed £250m New Generation Transport (NGT) trolleybus scheme.

There are various reasons to be cheerful about what comes next for the city – new rail franchises, Routemaster bus proposals and ambitious park-and-ride schemes.

And there is the not inconsiderable sum of £173m that the Government would have contributed to trolleybus which the city has been told it can keep and spend on other transport projects.

Leeds City Council leader Coun Judith Blake admits that £173m will not deliver a transport system that Leeds needs.

But she says the city has already been approached by people who are looking to invest funds in schemes that could tie in with housing or office developments.

Rather than feeling despondent. there is an excitement at how things have now opened up. A transport summit will be held on June 10 when we hope progress will be made.

The pressure is on: now it is time for our elected leaders to deliver.
