There’s a hint of sentimental fondness for the old red phone boxes and their demise was much lamented.
But in these days of mobiles in almost every pocket should we be pleased that phone boxes seem to be making a popular comeback onto the streets of Leeds?
Leeds Civic Trust chiefs say since March this year Leeds City Council has received 73 applications for new phone boxes in the city centre, with a further 75 applications expected in the near future. There are already 32 in just four streets in the city. These are not lovely red boxes providing an essential serive to those needing to make a phone call. They are rather ugly advertising hoardings which are littering our streets.
The Civic Trust makes a good point and the law needs to be tightened to limit their numbers.
