YEP Says: Leeds is in Premier League for shopping now

the fact that Leeds is now rated as the best British shopping centre outside London should be of no surprise to anyone.

The city has flourished in recent years as a shopping destination with a series of important and impressive developments which mean Leeds has leapfrogged Manchester.

We shouldn’t worry too much about our friends and rivals across the Pennines. What matters is what Leeds does. And the news that four more big retail names have been signed up for the Victoria Gate complex is good news.

It means that Victoria Gate is now well positioned to complement the Trinity centre.

And the city’s restaurant and leisure scene is likely to enjoy spin-off benefits, too.

Victoria Gate is 90 per cent let on opening and over half a billion pounds has been invested in the Leeds retail scene in five years.

That is a tangible sign of confidence in Leeds and West Yorkshire as a whole.

The people behind Victoria Gate said: “We really are announcing Leeds as the premium retail destination in the North of England.

“The catchment is far and wide, and there won’t be anywhere that really competes with this style of retail offer.”

Let’s hope that Leeds as a whole can continue to reap the rewards and that investment will be attracted into the city as a whole,
