It was on '˜Blue Monday', traditionally the most depressing day of the year, that supermarket giant Asda chose to announce to its staff that hundreds of jobs would be axed from its head office in Leeds.

Blaming ‘external pressures’ and major trading challenges, the chain’s November update revealed a tumble in sales and analysts fear its Christmas sales will not be much better.

A dismal day indeed for the affected staff, their colleagues and for the city that this famous Yorkshire employer calls home.
