England’s players can expect to be feted if Bennett’s side do spring a surprise in Brisbane, the deeply partisan Queensland city where Joe Root’s cricketers have just lost the opening Ashes Test so ingloriously.

Yet two characteristics became striking as the 2017 tournament unfolded – the fast pace at which the rugby league gospel is now spreading around the world and the level of goodwill that exists towards Bennett and his team.
