Two posing pooches have been named the YEP’s top dogs.

Six-month-old Bedlington whippet Dave and Jack Russell Dennis, five, were named winners of the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Star Pets competition 2013 after a picture of the pair cuddling up attracted the most reader votes.

They barked off competition from more than 80 other dogs, snakes, guinea pigs, horses, rabbits and birds to claim our top prize of £100 in vouchers to spend at Kirkstall-based Hundreds of votes were cast by readers, which also nominated Vicky Reader’s canine Brock and Lindsay Hamilton’s dog Tinker as our runners-up and winners of £50 pet vouchers.

Middleton health care assistant Lisa Guthrie, who is 
Dennis and Dave’s owner, said: “They’re lovely pets, they are my babies.

“I was really surprised to hear we’d won. I’m going to buy them lots of toys and maybe a new bed.”

The 30-year-old, who runs pet clothing business Purrfectly Woofly with a friend in her spare time, said Dennis and Dave were her “top models”.The YEP saw scores of applications sent through to our Whitehall Road offices.

They were whittled down to our top 20 entrants, before readers voted by text or coupon from the final top 10 in December.
