The Picture Editor Guild Awards recognise outstanding photography from the world of news, royalty, sport, business, fashion and entertainment.

These awards are distinctive in that panel of judges consist only of picture editors from national and regional newspapers and international photo agencies who assess thousands of entries each year.

Among his submissions was a dramatic shot of Hull City FC’s manager Steve Bruce as he held his head in his hands following the defeat to Arsenal in this year’s FA Cup Final.

The shot of student archeologist Laura Bradbeer at the Leeds Museum Discovery Centre provided a moody shot while the image he captured of a child cycling joyfully past flowering bushes at Roundhay Park summed up the best of summer.

The YEP’s assistant editor Ian Day said: “These awards are the best of the best in newspaper photography.

“James’ portfolio is second to none.”

The overall winner will be announced at an awards evening in February at The Honourable Artillery Company in London.
