YEP is a class act for budding journalists in Leeds

Children at a Leeds school are honing their talents as rookie reporters with the help of a Yorkshire Evening Post-backed education scheme.

Kippax Ash Tree Primary is among more than a dozen schools across the city taking part in the Let’s Read: LEEDS project, which launched at the start of last month.

Each child in participating classes gets a booklet filled with exciting activities designed to develop literacy skills.

They also receive copies of the YEP each week for six weeks – and, for the pupils at Kippax Ash Tree Primary, reading the paper is proving a particularly useful learning experience.

Deputy head Kimberley Rolls said: “The children already produce their own newspaper on a half-termly basis.

“Getting the YEP has given them a fresh way of looking at what they do themselves.”

She added: “The scheme as a whole is brilliant, reading the paper provides the children with access to more mature texts and information about current affairs as well.”

Around 100 Kippax Ash Tree Primary pupils across four classes in years five and six are taking part in Let’s Read: LEEDS, which is being run by the YEP in conjunction with The NEWS Foundation.

As previously reported by the YEP, the project has won praise in Parliament from Education Secretary Justine Greening and Leeds North West MP Greg Mulholland.

Other local schools involved with Let’s Read: LEEDS include Calverley Parkside Primary, Templenewsam Halton Primary, Kippax North Primary, Morley’s Asquith Primary and Adel St John The Baptist Primary.
