And, sure enough, scenes of fandemonium erupted once again across the city after the Three Lions saw off Sweden in their quarter-final yesterday. (July 7)

Police were forced to close the main road through Headingley to traffic following the game as jubilant supporters spilled out of pubs and bars to celebrate England’s win.

New Station Street in the city centre was also closed so police could manage the post-match crowds while footage on social media showed hundreds of fans singing and dancing at the junction of Merrion Street and New Briggate.

Millennium Square had earlier been full to capacity for its screening of the game, with some disappointed supporters being turned away during the run-up to kick-off.
