Wonderful line-up for annual Leeds arts spectacular

Have your say

Famous music names are set to take centre stage once again at this year’s Garforth Arts Festival.

Indie rock favourites Levellers and The Wonder Stuff were today confirmed on the bill for the annual summertime festival’s closing night Playground Party event, which will be held in the grounds of Garforth Academy.

They will be joined by the likes of ska veterans The Skatalites, singer and guitarist Vieux Farka Touré and Leeds band Ellen and the Escapades.

Festival director Dave Evans said: “We’re really delighted with the quality and diversity of the line-up.

“We try to get in high calibre artists every summer and hopefully people will agree that we have done just that. It should be a great occasion.”

Taking place this year for the 10th time, the festival runs from June 30 to July 12.

It will feature a whole host of music, comedy, literary and other arts performances and exhibitions in venues across Garforth.

As is traditional, local residents will be encouraged to adopt more than just a watching brief, with hundreds of youngsters expected to participate in festival-related educational activities. Details of the full 13-day programme are due to be announced shortly.

Backing for the festival has come from Arts Council England, School Partnership Trust, Garforth Academy, Youth Music and Leeds City Council.

Well-known music acts who have graced the festival in previous years include Richard Hawley, Billy Bragg, Buzzcocks, Courtney Pine and Leeds’s own Chumbawamba.
