Woman’s death on railway causes delays for Leeds commuters

Rail passengers travelling between Leeds and South Yorkshire are facing long delays after a woman was hit by a train at South Elmsall.

Trains between Doncaster and Leeds are being held up by up to two hours after the incident on Thursday afternoon.

British Transport Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

A spokesman said: “BTP officers were called to the line near South Elmsall station on Thursday following a report that a woman had been struck by a train.

“Officers from BTP and West Yorkshire Police attended the incident, which was reported to BTP at 2.07pm and is currently being treated as non-suspicious.

“Medics from Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish her identity and inform her family.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

National Rail Enquiries said East Coast passengers could use Cross Country and First TransPennine Express services on reasonable routes.

Replacement road transport is also being arranged.
