And gift-givers are resorting to finding even sneakier places to hide their presents from prying eyes according to new research.

The study, from Beaverbrooks the Jewellers, looks at the most common places people in the region are hiding their gifts.

It turns out that those looking for a sneak peek should be checking the wardrobe, with 27 per cent of people saying that was their favourite hiding place.

The second most likely place in the home was the loft (14 per cent) and under the bed came in third (nine per cent).

However, when it comes to that special gift, such as an engagement ring or luxury watch, 22 per cent of hiders said they would stash them in a locked suitcase.

It seems people buying the gifts are getting sneakier when it comes to making sure the surprise waits until Christmas Day – 14 per cent admitted taking up to an hour scouring the house for a suitable spot whole seven per cent of sneaky hiders said they have used a lower value gift as a decoy to throw snoopers off the scent.

The places least likely to harbour a Christmas surprise is at work (2.6 per cent), in the laundry basket (1.3 per cent) and at a neighbour’s house (1.3 per cent).

The study also found that nearly two in ten adults in the area admit to trying to find their presents before the big day, but despite the temptation to sneak a peek, 62 per cent believe a surprise gift from their partner makes for an extra special moment on Christmas Day.
