Is this West Yorkshire's most decorated pub?

When you walk in to The Black Rock pub, a Christmas wonderland greets you.

Festive lights line the bar, tinsel snakes its way around the walls, and foil decorations and streamers leave little of the ceiling on show.

Landlord Shaun Slater has gone all out to dress the pub, on Cross Square, Wakefield.

And with around 400 festive trimmings, it could be one the most decorated in the county.

Mr Slater said: “Everyone who comes in is like ‘wow’.

“For a lot of people, it reminds them of what everywhere used to be decorated like when they were kids.

“And our younger customers are in awe because they’ve not seen anything like it before.”

The 49-year-old, who has run the place for nearly 18 years, decked the pub in a “minimalist” style until three years ago, when friends moving out of the pub trade gave him their old decorations.

He decided to “go overboard” and put them all up.

He has since added to the collection to make the display “bigger and better” and this year has an extra 160 trimmings.

He said: “The first year, when I had a good look around after we’d finished trimming, I thought ‘what on earth am I doing?’

“But the response was absolutely fantastic so we decided to go for it again last year and now this year.

“It gets everybody in the festive spirit.

“You can’t even see the ceiling. It’s like a Christmas grotto.”
