A private care home in Ilkley has been found to be failing to provide “safe, effective, caring, responsive or well led” care for its elderly residents, according to a health care watchdog.
The Care Quality Commission (CQC) has branded Hollycroft Care Home, in Heber’s Ghyll Drive, Ilkley, “inadequate” due to failings unearthed during an inspection in October.
The home, which is run by Four Seasons Health Care, must make improvements or face enforcement action from the CQC.
Hollycroft’s failings included having incomplete care plan documentation, not having enough qualified staff to fully meet its residents’ needs, not assessing residents’ capacity to make decisions and a failure to report “safeguarding” incidents to City of Bradford Metropolitan Council or the CQC as required by law.
Debbie Westhead, the CQC’s deputy chief inspector of adult social care in the North, explained that the care provided at Hollycroft “fell a long way short” of what is expected.
“While we did see some caring interactions between staff and people living in the home, and that in some ways people were well supported, the safety issues we identified needed urgent attention,” she said.
“We have made it clear that we will return to the home to check that the necessary improvements have been made. If not, we will take further action to make sure that people living there receive care which is safe, effective, caring and responsive to their needs.”
Hollycroft Care Home can accommodate up to 28 elderly residents.
The facility is one of 450 care homes in the UK operated by Four Seasons Health Care, which is the largest independent health and social care provider in the country.
A spokeswoman for Four Seasons Health Care apologised for the failings, and said the home will conduct refresher training for all staff. Staffing levels will also be assessed on a weekly basis after all residents have had a ‘capacity assessment’ in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005.
She said: “We are sorry that the care at Hollycroft Care Home fell below the standards that we expect all of our care homes to provide.
“We have accepted the CQC’s requirements and recommendations and we are implementing a comprehensive improvement.”
