There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel, the Met Office says.

There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off.

There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

The yellow warning for snow is in place from midnight on Thursday to 6am on Friday.

The Met Office forecast says: "A band of rain will slowly arrive from the southwest during the early hours of Thursday morning, turning to snow on the hills.

"A band of rain and snow will continue to move slowly northeastwards during Thursday.

"Some significant snowfall on the hills, but not exclusively. Snow turning lighter and patchy overnight."

The rain and snow will gradually ease on Friday, with widespread severe frost overnight.

It will be dry, sunny and cold on Saturday and early Sunday, before rain and hill snow arrives from the west later.

What will the weather be like next week?

Looking ahead to next week, “Unsettled conditions look likely to dominate for this period, with low pressure across the UK,” said the Met Office.

This should bring changeable weather to most of the country, with periods of rain, showers, and strong winds at times.

Although mild westerly and southwesterly winds are expected to be dominant for most of this period, occasional colder northerly winds are possible, which bring a chance of snowfall. However, this is likely to be confined to far northern parts.
