West Yorkshire Fire warns of heatwave hazards as scorching temperatures hit Leeds

Firefighters have issued a warning on heatwave fire hazards as Leeds braces for scorching temperatures today.

It could be the hottest day of the year so far with bright sunshine and temperatures of up to 29C forecast in Leeds.

But West Yorkshire Fire has warned residents of the hazards which have sparked devastating fires during previous hot weather spells.

Firefighters shared a picture of a room torched by a house fire, caused by the sun reflecting off a mirror left in direct sunlight.

West Yorkshire Fire tweeted: "We're expecting highs of 29°C!

"Did you know, on a bright day it’s possible for the sun to reflect off a mirror and start a fire? That’s what happened with the room below.

"Keep mirrors away from direct sunlight and if you see fire close the door and call us."

It follows a warning from firefighters of the danger of keeping potentially flammable hand sanitiser in cars during hot weather.

There has been a number of reports of alcohol-based hand sanitisers being the cause of vehicle fires in the UK.
