According to National Geographic, hail is formed when drops of water freeze together in the cold upper regions of thunderstorm clouds.

These chunks of ice are called hailstones.

Most hailstones measure between 5 millimeters and 15 centimeters in diameter, and can be round or jagged.

Hailstones can cause extreme damage to buildings, vehicles, and crops.

Thunder and lightning also hit Leeds this evening, with localised flooding reported on roads.

One social media user said: "From beautiful weather to this in just two days, can't make it up."

Another said this was 'typical of 2020'.
