It's an issue that always gets the city talking - and no matter how much Leeds City Council does, there never seems to be quite enough grit to go around.

But it emerged that last night a planned gritting was called off altogether as temperatures were warmer than predicted.

However, temperatures soon plummeted and drivers across Leeds were faced with patches of hazardous black ice on their commutes.

"Many roads like skating rinks and many car accidents as well, it makes you wonder what do we pay are council tax for?"

Lorraine Moyles added: "If temperatures are predicted to be one degree then preventive gritting should take place regardless and I really wish they would do pavements too, after all, they are part of the public highway, not to mention that most injuries are caused by falls on icy pavements."

But Chris Oliver was unaffected. "I drove to work at 5.30am roads were fine," he said. "No point wasting money, good call I say."

Paul Walker added: "Yes they made a mistake but I thank all the gritter driver’s for keeping the roads safe over the winter months."

And Paul Dishman sadi: "Generally do a good job - unlucky call on this one and maybe those calling for bills to be sent to LCC should think about personal accountability in driving for the conditions."

Leeds is set for a cold few nights ahead, with many hoping the same mistake won't be made again

Emma Birkenshaw said: "I lost control of my car this morning but was lucky to be able to run it onto a grass verge. The woman behind me lost control and hit an oncoming car.

"I have just passed a gritter though so hopefully tomorrow morning will be safer."
