Temperatures are set to turn bitterly cold heading into this evening, with the Met Office warning of widespread frost and potentially icy conditions in parts.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather alert for ice earlier this morning, with the warning covering parts of Scotland and the north of England, and parts of Northern England could also see snowfall later in the week.

A Met Office spokesman told Metro: "Monday night going into Tuesday will be particularly cold, as rain from the south west bumps into colder air and snow across northern England and northern Wales as well as parts of Scotland.

"We’re expecting some snow on higher ground in Northern England and Northern Wales, with nothing too significant on lower levels."

Tonight in Leeds, temperatures are set to fall to a bitter 1C by 10pm and while it will remain dry, frost will develop overnight and the wintry weather could plummet to as low as -3C.
