Council teams on standby for snow in Leeds as roads closed due to flooding

Leeds Council said their teams are bracing to react to snow expected in the city - as they provided an update on road closures due to flooding.

The council said lots of surface water from the heavy rain across Leeds is "causing difficulties on roads".

They warned drivers not to travel - with their "teams busy dealing with clearing [the flooding] while also on standby in case of snow".

Leeds Council said: "We should all be making only essential journeys due to lockdown, but if you must go out take care."

Partial road closures due to the flooding include Barnsdale Rd, Allerton Bywater, Troydale Lane, Pudsey, the A6610 ring road between Butt Lane Farnley and Whitehall Road roundabouts and on Aberford Road, Oulton.

There are also closures on Brigshaw Lane Kippax; Main Street Allerton Bywater; Gelderd Road, Beeston Royds; Aberford Road near Rothwell Sports Centre.

The council is responding to flooded lanes at Armley Gyratory and monitoring Leeds Road, Bramhope.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice has been on place across the city from 3pm today - issued by the Met Office.

There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off and power cuts are more likely, according to the warning.

The full warning issued by the Met Office - available here - reads: "Snow showers will effect many northern and eastern parts of the UK, which may lead to travel disruption.

"There is a small chance of travel delays on roads with some stranded vehicles and passengers, along with delayed or cancelled rail and air travel.

"There is a small chance that power cuts will occur and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected.

"There is a slight chance that some rural communities could become cut off."

The forecast for Leeds today is: "Cloudy with showers. Colder into the weekend with snow showers.

"Showers or longer spells of rain, falling increasingly as snow over higher ground and perhaps to lower levels inland later today. Feeling very cold everywhere with a strong easterly wind, with coastal gales possible. Maximum temperature 6 °C.
