The police watchdog has appealed for witnesses to come forward after launching an investigation into a police chase which ended with a fatal car crash.

Tesfa Hughes, 26, died after the VW Golf he was driving hit an Audi A4 on Roundhay Road, Harehills, at about 7.05pm last Wednesday.

West Yorkshire Police said he was being pursued after failing to stop for a marked police BMW minutes earlier.

The 37-year-old woman who was driving the Audi is still being treated in hospital for multiple serious injuries. The matter was referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which has now begun a formal investigation.

IPCC Commissioner Kathryn Stone said: “My sympathies go out to the family and friends of Tesfa Hughes at this difficult time. The IPCC will conduct an independent investigation to examine all the circumstances of the incident.

“We want to examine as much evidence as possible.”
