The Leeds First Direct Arena show, billed as the biggest opening ceremony in Tour history, will feature music from Yorkshire acts like Embrace and Girls Aloud star Kimberley Walsh as well as from French singer Pauline Vassuer.

The ceremony’s executive producer Martin Green said: “We’re kicking off what is going to be an extraordinary weekend.”

More than 10,000 people are expected to witness the official Team Presentation in person tonight, which will take place after all 198 Tour riders cycle through Millennium Square in Leeds city centre to the arena.

The cycling parade will lead to some city centre road closures and parking restrictions from 4pm to around 10pm.

Coun Keith Wakefield, leader of Leeds City Council, said: “I would ask please for people to be patient and understand this is very much a special one-off, and if possible I would advise staying in the city centre and joining in the fun as it really will be something to see and be part of.”
