NHS Wakefield Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said it wanted to extend the contract for the service at King Street for at least the next two years.

The move has been announced to “dampen rumours” that the centre was threatened because of the closure of a GP practice at the same premises.

The practice will shut when its contract ends on March 31 and its 3,700 patients can register with another practice nearby.

The walk-in service is run under a separate contract, currently held by Local Care Direct, which runs until the end of September. This will be extended as part of a plan to give people better access to primary care and GP services, which also includes extended GP opening hours.

Dr Greg Connor, medical advisor to the CCG, said: “The walk-in service remains an important local service and is highly valued by many patients. The CCG, local practices and Local Care Direct are extending and building on the good primary care services we already have so that people across the district get prompt safe care and do not queue in a hospital emergency department unnecessarily.”
