THE SIGHTS, sounds and smells of the battleground will be brought to life to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo.

Stunt riders from Atkinson Action Horses were at the Royal Armouries, ahead of a week of events to mark the anniversary, starting on Saturday.

The team, who provided horses for the BBC drama Poldark, will be back at the Armouries on the weekend of June 20 and 21, showcasing cavalry fighting techniques used at Waterloo. The events co-incide with an exhibition that includes the telescope the Duke of Wellington carried into battle and artist Daniel Maclise’s rarely-seen cartoon depicting Waterloo.

Event officer Lisa Power said: “A lot of people will know about the battle itself, but what the events and the exhibition will do, is put flesh and bones on what happened that day, and bring it to life.”
