Lewis Crathern was competing in the semi-finals of the Red Bull King of the Air competition in South Africa when a massive double kite loop trick failed, sending him plummeting 20 metres into the sea.

The 31-year-old British freestyle kitesurf champion’s accident was considered so serious doctors waited an entire week to wake him up. On Valentine’s Day Lewis was greeted by a large red helium balloon, his girlfriend Courtney and mum Sandra Crathern, who have been by his side all week. Shortly after she arrived in South Africa Sandra said on Facebook: “Arrived here in South Africa and so grateful to Courtney MacDonald, Dave and Stefanie for being Lewis’ surrogate family.
