Video: Leeds United protestors beam anti-Cellino messages onto Elland Road in £2,600 stunt

A group of Leeds United fans staged an audacious stunt in a row over the club’s ownership – by beaming protest messages onto Elland Road stadium.

The Time to go Massimo group – who want president Massimo Cellino to quit – projected a series of 30ft high images onto the side of the East Stand before and during last night’s goalless draw against Middlesbrough.

One said: “12 years of false promises, we’ve had enough!”

Another said: “We were here before you and still will be after you’ve gone.”

The £2,600 stunt was paid for by crowdfunding and masterminded by EMF Technology, the company famed for projecting a naked image of television personality Gail Porter onto the Houses of Parliament in 1999.

It came days after Cellino threatened legal action for alleged harassment when the group installed an advertisement outside the ground demanding he sell the club.

Meanwhile, more than 1,400 votes were cast in a Yorkshire Evening Post online poll asking whether the fans are right to continue their protest, with around three quarters answering ‘yes’.

Tom Banks, one of the organisers of last night’s stunt, said: “The club has only been going backwards for some time. Fans are starting to realise if they want change they are going to have to take action. We can only try our best. It’s just about trying to get a message across.”

The group are unhappy about the current quality of football at United as well as the club’s transfer policy and off-field controversies.

Damian Rushworth, who has been a United fan since the 1980s, said: “You can’t just sit by and do nothing.

“Like many fans I was hopeful when Cellino arrived, but two years down the line we have seen no progress, we’ve been selling players, swapping managers and I don’t see any way forward.”

The club last night declined to comment on the row.
