The event on Saturday, September 12, at Jumbo Records in the St John’s Centre, will see three local acts perform for customers and local bands are being encouraged to pop down to the store and submit their demos to a representative from national record label Too Pure.

To mark the day, Jumbo has teamed up with local breweries Kirkstall and Zapato to produce a special beer which - while not available in the shop itself - will be sold in a number of bars around Leeds, including the Brudenell Social Club and North Bar.

If successful, the store plans to hold a number of similar events in the future, inviting other bands from the area to perform.

Singer-songwriter Behla Hutchinson will kick off proceedings at 12pm, with four-piece up-and-coming pop band Vitamin following an hour later.

To finish off the live music, Leeds singer-songwriter Serious Sam Barrett - who has received a growing amount of national radio airplay and music press attention - will play at around 2pm.

Jumbo’s Matt Bradshaw said the idea developed following a string of popular in-store performances that had been held at the shop in recent months - both from local bands and more well-established acts such as Billy Bragg, who played there in July.

“We’ve been a big supporter of local bands for many years now and we often do some in-store promotions with local bands,” he said.

“So we thought it would be a good idea to celebrate a lot of bands that we like.”

He added: “We just want to celebrate the local music scene really and help promote what is out there.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun, but there’s definitely a purpose behind it.”

As well as the three bands on offer, Wisdom Teeth Records will be around to play special mixes throughout the event, which first gets underway at around noon.
