SWIMMERS marked the start of a new year with dips across the county.

In Otley about 30 swimmers enjoyed a bracing swim in the river Wharfe which raised money for a cancer charity and a local cricket club.

One of the organisers, Helen Town, said the water was “quite warm” compared to past years.

She said that the number of swimmers taking part were down on previous years due to illness.

In Ilkley, a few hardy souls enjoyed an invigorating dip at the historic spa of White Wells which is an 8ft by 6ft stone bath.

On the East Coast, a New Year’s day swim at Scarborough saw fancy dress swimmers raise money for several charities.
