A spokesman for the force said: “He was taken to Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor where he was later formally identified. The North West Wales Coroner has been informed.”

Mr Longfellow was last seen when he spoke with walkers in Llanfihangel y Pennant, Gwynedd at around 4pm last Sunday

Police said he told the group that he would attempt to walk on Tryfan or the Snowdon Horseshoe, but had not contacted his family or friends since then.

Fears were raised by Mr Longfellow’s family when he failed to return home on Thursday.
