Updated: Dead body pulled from river near Dewsbury town centre identified as missing man

The body of a man found in the River Calder in Dewsbury has been identified as missing local man Daniel France.

West Yorkshire Police officers were called to Sands Lane yesterday at around 11.35am after reports that a body had been spotted in the water there.

Police cars and ambulances gathered on a playing fields complex off Mill Street East, close to the centre of Dewsbury.

Officers recovered the body from the river under the railway viaduct. Mr France’s family has been informed.

Emergency services were at the scene for several hours yesterday and enquiries remain ongoing into the circumstances of the death.

It is the fourth waterways tragedy in Kirklees in a month.

A body was pulled from the River Calder between Cooper Bridge and Mirfield on Good Friday.

The grim discovery was made by a member of the public at about 3pm.

The body was pulled from the River Calder near to the John Cotton’s bedding factory on Huddersfield Road.

The latest tragic discoveries come after a 77-year-old man perished despite being rescued from the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal at Thornhill Lees.

And a Huddersfield teenager was found dead in the Huddersfield Broad Canal at Hillhouse earlier this month.
