A cordon was put in place until the army's bomb squad arrives to make an assessment.

It resulted in the closure of the A660 Otley Road in both directions between the A6120 Leeds Outer Ring Road and Otley Old Road, with delays of more than an hour being reported by bus companies.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the road had reopened at around 5.30pm after the grenade was declared safe.

Bus services are returning to their usual routes and delays are reported to be clearing.
