University student offers advice to Leeds students after A-level results

But one Leeds Beckett University student was on hand to offer advice to those about the process as young people at Allerton Grange School opened their results this morning (Thursday).

Amin Mahdmina, 22, went through Clearing himself to land a place at the city university in 2014.

He said: “Most of the students at Allerton Grange were happy and smiling and had a clear idea of what they wanted to do.

“Thankfully a lot of them got into their first or second choices with their results.

“I was talking to them about the university experience today, what it would be like and trying to prepare them for it.

“But even for students who haven’t got the grades they wanted it’s not over - you have to be positive and surround yourself with positive people, keep upbeat and have an open mind.”

Mr Mahdmina, a third-year architectural technology student, studied for his A-levels at St Ambrose College in Cheshire.

He used Clearing after deciding he wanted to study a different course than the one he originally applied for.

Clearing is an over-the-phone process where students who didn’t make their predicted A-level grades can find a different university.

Students contact universities directly and decisions on places are often made during the first call.

Mr Mahdmina added: “When I went through the clearing process, I managed to speak to course leaders at Leeds Beckett and they were very helpful, they got back to me quickly after I called and gave me feedback.

“The main thing is not to panic, stay positive and stay patient and if you are persistent you will get there.

“It’s not all doom and gloom, even if you have to wait a another year to do what you want it will go really quickly.”
